We are a group of Portuguese citizens who are establishing a party for the animals in our country. The situation of non-human animals in Portugal is shameful in many regards, and existing political parties have done very little to change that. A few weeks ago, a proposition to ban the use of animals in circuses was discussed and rejected in Portuguese parliament. Why? According to MP Eugénia Alho, because animal welfare should not be a priority in a time of crisis. Our first goal is to gather all of those who disagree with her and believe that animal welfare should be a priority - crisis or no crisis. We want to be the voice of those who recognise the importance of other issues (health, education, job creation, etc.) but think animal issues are also important and also need to be tackled. Joining our project is saying there can be no more excuses, no more putting off, ignoring, condoning the status quo. It's saying it's not acceptable to wait until all strictly human problems are solved and then consider animal problems. That's exactly why the State has tens of ministers and secretaries of state and thousands of employees: so it can work on many issues at a time. That's what we, as citizens, have a right to demand from them. Before Portuguese law, animals are things whose value depends on how useful they are for humans, although science has been proving - and if you live with animals, you already knew it - that animals are sentient beings who have an intrinsic value and dignity, which must be respected. Those who know this and are outraged at the way animals are treated in Portugal - by people and the law - have a place in Partido Pelos Animais. We are inspired by similar parties in other countries, specifically Partij voor de Dieren, who already has one seat in the upper house and two in the lower house of the Netherlands' parliament. In a democratic state, creating a party is not only a right but also the most effective way to influence political power so politicians will pay attention to the concerns of thousands of citizens. This is not, however, a one issue party. Our goal is to work towards a society who respects animals - humans included - and nature, which we see as the only way life on earth can be sustainable and pleasant for everyone. You can read our Manifesto to learn more about our vision and principles. What can you do to help? Even if you're not Portuguese and don't live in Portugal, you can join and spread the word about Partido Pelos Animais' Facebook group. If you do live in Portugal, you can help with signature collection - 7500 are required to start a party. Please contact us for more information or any questions or comments you may have. Thank you very much for your interest in our project! |
